Cabrillo National Monument
Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore what is now the west coast of
the United States. Cabrillo himself later died during the expedition, but his crew pushed on,
possibly as far north as Oregon, before winter storms forced them to back to Mexico.

Ocean Beach History
Billy Carlson and Frank Higgins laid out streets in 1887 and sold lots at a big mussel roast on
the beach. They named the new town "Ocean Beach." Carlson went on to become mayor of
San Diego and later went to prison on charges of land fraud.

Poway: A Historical Sketch
Diegueno and Luiseno Indians roamed the area for several hundred years before the Spaniards came.
Philip Crosthwaite is believed to have been the first white person to settle in the Poway area. He
built an adobe house and took up ranching in 1859. The Poway valley proved ideal for cattle.
