The Federal army came close to capturing a vital position on James Island in June Charleston 1862
- Federal General Benham's poor planning and the timely arrival of reinforcements resulted in a
victory for the outnumbered Confederates. Had the Federals captured Battery Lamar, they would have
flanked the harbor defenses and might have forced the abandonment of Charleston by the Confederacy.
