Islam and converting

All I have is a question brought on by a discution with a older gentleman. He says that the Qur'an says, although he didn't remember the exact why it was said, that " All must convert to Islam or be killed ". I read and heard somewhere that that isn't true, that it was taken out of context by radical extremest. Can someone please tell me the truth ??
