Description:     At UIC, there is significant depth in environmental research and scholarship extending over six colleges. However, as at most universities, substantial structural barriers to collaboration exist. In recognition of this, over forty faculty and staff members from among twelve departments and three centers met for a two-day planning session in May of 1998 during which the vision and basic mission of IESP were set forth, and a formal petition seeking to form the institute was drafted. This received administrative approval in early 2000, with Professor Steven L. Forman of Earth and Environmental Science appointed as Interim Director. Under his leadership, the institute established its initial presence on campus through the sponsorship of seminars and conferences, and assembly of the Steering Committee
